Using elements of performance art in library instruction
Emily Missner - business librarian, Drexel University Libraries
Using elements of performance art can make instruction presentations exciting, memorable, and useful. This presentation will concentrate the avant-garde Fluxus school of art, which is instructional in nature and incorporates the audience into the performance, and will look at ways to use elements of Fluxism in our own instruction.

I incorporated several ideas from Emily's presentation into a library one-shot and asked students for their evaluations of each element. The group of 18 liked the cell phone activity (with Ref desk number), the "we are" cheer, and Way or No Way. In place of clickers I had green Way slips of paper and Red No Way slips of paper at each desk for students to hold up. Ratio of liking to disliking was about 3-1 in favor of each. I also had them evaluate the session overall by leaving me a rose or a rotten tomato. I had slips of paper with the picture of a rose on one and a picture of a person holding her nose on another. Now I have the idea to buy little plastic pigs and some artificial flowers and let them (gently!) toss one at the end of the program to give their feedback.
