LOEX WEST Attendees: HotBooks
Enter into the spirit of the conference before you even arrive! Join us for the interactive HotBooks- Las Vegas Edition game to be played during the conference; the winner will be announced on Friday with our closing keynote address. Some of you may have heard of the game “Hot Potato”—well, this game also involves passing things along to someone else, but in a more intentional way. Complete information on the rules of engagement will be spelled out at the conference, BUT, in the meantime, we’d like you to pick a potato—make that a book—to help us get the game started. You’ll be the “owner” of the book you pick, but it won’t necessarily be the book initially attached to your profile. So pick a book that’s meaningful to you—maybe the most novel novel you’ve read, or a book that captures your essence or that of your evil twin or your cat or…
Here’s how to get started~
Register and set up your profile card here.
Important! Since your username is what people will see when looking for people to attach books to, use your first and last name or a recognizable variation thereof.
Pick a book from the UNLV libraries, preferably one that’s checked in :-)
If you absolutely cannot find a book in our collection that works for you and/or you have a book you are dying to toss into the ring, you can bring the book with you to the conference and we’ll add it to the “Flash Library.” We will work with you to get books returned to their rightful owners after the winner is announced. Books have to remain available during the game for participants to use in finding clues.
Please contact Paula McMillen at paula.mcmillen@unlv.edu or 702-895-2135 if you have problems with the registration. We hope you’ll join us for this great interactive conference activity!

LOEX WEST Attendees: Parking and Dorm Arrival Clarification
UNLV requires parking permits for all vehicles, Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. If you do not already have a UNLV permit, you may purchase a temporary parking pass. Cost for a pass is $3 for a one-day pass and $7 for a seven-day pass. For LOEX attendees who have pre-paid for parking passes as part of your registration, your pass will be included with your conference guest card and room key. For LOEX attendees who have expressed a need for a parking permit but did not pre-pay with registration as well as attendees who may look to purchase a parking permit, this can be done at the Conference Housing Front Desk in Tonopah when you check in. Please bring cash or check (payable to the "NSHE Board of Regents").
Arrival Information
The Tonopah main entrances are unlocked from 8:00 a.m. - 11 p.m. Should you arrive for check-in beyond those hours, there is an intercom system which will get you in contact with the 24-hour-a day Tonopah front desk, who can let you in. Once you complete your check in, your conference guest card will give you access to the building throughout your stay.

Notes for Attendees
LOEX of the West 2008 attendees!
We’re so pleased you’ll be joining us in sunny Las Vegas next month. Please read through this email carefully as we have a few questions for you and will be sharing some useful information as well.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Please be sure to visit the conference website for the complete schedule and program information. Most conference programming will take place on the second floor of the UNLV Student Union(building 31 near Maryland Pkwy on the linked map (pdf). Las Vegas in June is frequently quite warm and dry. Please be sure to drink plenty of water. Distances may be deceiving. While the Las Vegas Strip is only a few miles from campus, it would be an ambitious walk along busy streets in the heat of the day. If you are staying on the Strip, you may want to consider either renting a car(parking is free at Strip hotels) or taking cabs to and from campus. We will attempt to help coordinate some cab sharing at the Conference main desk if there is interest. Conference materials pickup will be at the Conference main desk on the second floor of the Student Union. Conference packets will include print receipts generated by UNLV’s Educational Outreach documenting your registration and dormitory payment.
PARKING & TAXIS
For those of you driving, we suggest parking in the Red Lot near the dorms. If you will have a car on campus and have NOT already purchased a $7 parking permit through the registration process, please contact Kate Wintrol by May 20st at kate.wintrol@unlv.edu. Las Vegas has a wide variety of taxicabs and shuttle services. If you are planning to take a taxi from McCarran Airport directly to UNLV the fare should be under $15. If you are planning to stay at a hotel, the cab fares vary. For a list of hotels and their cab fares, visit the Las Vegas Taxicab Authority website. Another option from the airport to hotels is the commercial shuttle company: Bell Trans. From the airport to most nearby hotels Bell Trans currently charges $6.00 per person or you can purchase a roundtrip voucher for $11. 00 per person.
OPENING RECEPTION
The opening reception will take place at the International Gaming Institute in the Stan Fulton building on the UNLV Campus and will include cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and craps and blackjack lessons conducted by professional dealers. Shuttles will be available from the Red Lot/ Dorm Parking area and the Student Union to and from the Stan Fulton Building. Also, taxi cab drivers should be familiar with the Stan Fulton Building as a destination or you can direct them to Building 55 near Flamingo & Swenson on this map.
If you are driving, you may park in the Red Lot and take a shuttle or make your way to parking lot T on the map.
MEALS
Registration includes breakfast and lunch on Thursday and Friday, dinner on Thursday and receptions both Wednesday and Friday. Most meals will be buffet style with options for vegetarians. Thursday dinner will be served with vegetarian options for those who indicated dietary restrictions at registration. If you know that you will NOT be joining us for dinner on Thursday evening, please let us know before May 12th, email Lateka Grays at lateka.grays@unlv.edu. For attendees with guests, we will conduct a meal ticket swap at the conference. Attendees who decide after May 21st that they will not participate in Thursday dinner will be invited to donate their meal tickets to the swap where attendees with guests may pick them up first come first served.
TECHNOLOGY
Attendees staying in dorms will have the option of setting up internet connections for personal laptops in their rooms at check in- more information on this option will be forthcoming. Labs in Lied Library will be open selected hours for use by attendees and will have full high speed internet connectivity and printing capabilities. A few computers with wireless access will be available at the Conference Information Center in the Student Union. We ask that when others are waiting, use of these computers be kept to 15 minutes.
PRE/ POST CONFERENCE FUN
